- Week 25 Preparing date: ___ Teaching date: ___ Period: 79 UNIT 8 – NEW WAYS TO LEARN Writing A. AIMS By the end of this lesson, Ss will be able to: 1. Knowledge - Use lexical items related to the topic New ways to learn - Write a paragraph about the benefits of blended learning 2. Competence - Be collaborative and supportive in pair work and team work; - Actively join in class activities; - Develop writing skills. 3. Quality - Be aware of the benefits of blended learning so that students can make use of their time in class to study better - Be more active in blended learning classrooms B. TEACHING AIDS 1. Students: - Grade 10 textbook 2. Teachers: - Computer connected to the Internet - Projector/ TV/ pictures and cards - sachmem.vn C. TEACHING PROCEDURE I. Warm up: MENTI GAME (6 minutes) Objectives: - To create an active atmosphere in the class before the lesson; - To lead into the new lesson Content: Having some warm-up activities to create a friendly and relaxed atmosphere to interest Ss in the lesson. Output: Students’ interest in the new lesson Process: * T provides the link to the website MENTI.COM and asks Ss to use their smart devices to get access to the link. Ss do as required in the link: Write down all types of learning that you have learnt. Ss share the answers with each other. T checks if the answers are correct or incorrect, and reviews the meaning of the learning methods. T draws Ss’ attention to the phrase BLENDED LEARNING and lets them know they are going to learn about this topic. II. New lesson 1. Activities Page | 1
- Activity 1: Pre-writing (6 minutes) Objective: To help students recall some suggestions for the benefits of blended learning Content: Discussing Output: Ss can recall some suggestions for the benefits of blended learning Process: WORK IN PAIRS. DISCUSS AND TICK THE BENEFITS OF BLENDED LEARNING *Teacher - has Ss work in pairs and asks them to discuss and then put a tick to the benefits of blended learning. In advanced classes, teacher can let them voice other benefits Ss do as instructed. Teacher asks individual to call out their answers and confirms the correct ones. Suggested answers: 1. It helps Ss have more control of their own learning. 2. It is easier to get access to lesson materials. 4. Ss can develop better communication and teamwork skills. While-writing Activity 2: (8 minutes) Objectives: To help Ss develop and organise ideas for their writing a paragraph. Content: Gap filling Output: Ss can develop and organise ideas for the writing Process: WORK IN GROUP. USE THE BENEFITS IN ACTIVITY 1 AND YOUR WON IDEAS TO COMPLETE THE FOLLOWING OUTLINE * Teacher: - tells Ss that they are going to write a paragraph about the benefits of blended learning. First, they will be provided with an outline they have to use the benefits of Act.1 to complete it. - asks Ss to study the outline - puts Ss into groups and has them complete the outline, encourages Ss to use the benefits in Act.1 and think of more supporting ideas. Ss do as instructed. Ss discuss and share their answers with a peer. Teacher checks the answers by calling on some groups to read or write their answer on the board. Suggested answers: - Second, Ss can develop better communication and teamwork skills. - Explanation 1: We can use different ways to communicate in class. - Concluding sentence: I think we should have more blended learning classes at school because they keep us engaged and help us learn useful skills. Activity 3: (15 minutes) Objectives: To help students practise writing a paragraph about the benefits of blended learning Content: Writing a paragraph Output: Ss’ paragraph Process: THE OUTLINE IN ACT.2 AND EXPRESSIONS BELOW TO WRITE A PARAGRAPH ABOUT THE BENEFITS OF BLENDED LEARNING (P.92) Page | 2
- * Teacher: - explains the writing task. - has Ss brainstorm more benefits in groups. - walks round the class to offer help and encourages Ss to take notes of their ideas. - asks Ss to write their benefits to complete the paragraph individually, sets a limited time for this task and walks round the class to give further support if needed. - reminds them to use some connectors to link the ideas before they write: + To list ideas: First, Second, In addition, Additionally, Moreover, Furthermore, Another idea worth noting is that, Finally, + To give an example: For example / For instance, To illustrate, + To conclude: In conclusion, In brief, In short, To sum up, Ss do as instructed. Ss share their answers with their group members. T walks round the class to monitor and make a note of some common mistakes. Activity 4: Post-writing (7 minutes) Objectives: To give students an opportunity to recognise the common mistakes so that they can avoid in writing Content: Peer correction and class correction Output: Students’ complete pieces of writing Process: PEER CORRECTION * Teacher: - explains the marking symbols in the following table. - asks two Ss sitting next to each other to exchange their writing, read their partner’s writing and write the symbols next to mistakes that they can find like the ones in the table above. - asks Ss to return their partner’s writing and lets them correct themselves. - reminds them that they can ask for their partner’s help. Ss do as instructed. Ss share their ideas with a partner. Teacher goes around to offer help. CLASS CORRECTION * Teacher: Page | 3
- - writes Ss’ common mistakes on the board, asks Ss to check whether they make the same mistakes in their writing. - calls on some Ss to correct those mistakes as a class. Ss do as instructed. Teacher: - further explains the paragraph structure if Ss are not able to develop the three elements in their writing. - collects Ss’ writing and provides written feedback in the next lesson. - in weaker classes, provides some suggested answers if necessary. Sample answer: Blended learning is a way of studying a subject, which combines learning over the Internet and face-to-face learning and brings several benefits to us. Firstly, blended learning helps us have more control over our own learning. We are able to get access to many online materials and video lectures at any time. This also allows us to watch and review lessons that we have not understood at home. 2. Consolidation (2 minutes) Teacher asks: What have you learnt today? - We have practised writing a paragraph about benefits of blended learning. 3.
