- Week 24 Preparing date: ___ Teaching date: ___ Period: 75 UNIT 8 – NEW WAYS TO LEARN Listening A. AIMS By the end of this lesson, Ss will be able to: 1. Knowledge - Get an overview about the topic Blended learning class. - Listen to instructions on how to prepare for blended learning class for specific information ; - Talk about blended learning. 2. Competence - Develop listening skills: listen for specific details - Be collaborative and supportive in pair work and team work; - Actively join in class activities; 3. Quality - Be aware of blended- learning class and identify the differences between traditional and blended-learning class - Develop self-study skills B. TEACHING AIDS 1. Students: - Grade 10 textbook 2. Teachers: - Computer connected to the Internet - Projector/ TV/ pictures and cards - sachmem.vn C. TEACHING PROCEDURES I. Warm up: Watch a video (6 minutes) Objectives: - To create an active atmosphere in the class before the lesson; - To lead into the new lesson Content: Having some warm-up activities to create a friendly and relaxed atmosphere to interest Ss in the lesson. Output: Students’ interest in the new lesson Process: Watch a video * Teacher: - divides the class into 2 teams, let whole class watch a video “Blended learning” from Youtube: (from 0:00 - 1:28) - asks Ss to watch the video then name 3 components of blended learning. - lets each team choose 1 representatives - asks the representatives to try to write the three components of blended learning down on the Page | 1
- board Ss do as instructed. Representatives try to give the answers Teacher confirms the correct words, decides the winner. The winner is the one who can write the most components. Answers: 3 components are - face-to face learning activities - digital learning objects - independent study time II. New lesson 1. Vocabulary (6 minutes) Objective: To pre-teach the pronunciation and the meaning of some vocabulary so that students can understand the content of the listening. Content: Vocabulary introduction Output: SS can acquire the vocabulary Process: *T asks Ss to look at the slides and guess the word(s) as instructed. Ss look at the slides and raise hands to answer. Slide 1: Fill in the blank You can _ _ _ _ _ _ your own videos on YouTube. Slide 2: Another word for ‘online class’? Slide 3: What is it? Slide 4: What is he doing? Activities Pre-listening TICK THE BOX (6 minutes) Activity 1: Objective: To introduce the topic of the listening and activate Ss’ prior knowledge Content: Read and tick the box Output: SS can get to know the topic Process: *T asks Ss to open the book and discuss with their friend next to them what they do to prepare for a lesson. * Ss discuss and tick the box. T calls 1 pair to speak their answers. While-listening Activity 2: Listening for specific information (8 minutes) Objective: To help Ss practise listening for specific information. Content: Listening for specific information Output: Ss can do the given task Process: ANSWER THE QUESTIONS (p.91) * Teacher: - tells Ss that they are going to listen to a conversation between a teacher and her students and answer the two questions. - has them read the questions, underline the key words. - checks the key words with the whole class. - plays the recording and has Ss do the activity, paying attention to the key words to catch the ideas. Ss do as instructed. Ss share their answers with a peer. Teacher: - checks the answers as a class, asks SS to give the clues. - plays the recording again if many Ss have incorrect answers, pausing at the places where they can get the correct information. Activity 3: Listening and filling in the gaps (7 minutes) Objective: To help students practise listening for specific information Content: Listening for specific information Output: Students can listen and do the given task Process: Listen to the second part of the conversation and complete the flow chart with no more than TWO words (starting from 0:12s ) * Teacher: - has Ss read the instruction and focus their attention on the word ‘ONE’ - has them read the incomplete text and try to have a guess at what part of speech might fit each gap, e.g. 1.adjective/ noun; 2. Verb (infinitive) a verb (infinitive) 3. a noun/noun phrase, 4. a verb (infinitive), 5. a verb (infinitive) -plays the recording once for Ss to complete the flow chart with on more than two words Ss do as instructed. Ss share their answers with a peer. Teacher: - checks the answers by calling on some Ss to write their answers on the board or read them aloud. - plays the recording again if many Ss have incorrect answers, pausing at the places where they can get the correct information. Content: Discussing Output: Students can listen and do the given task Process: Compare Blended Learning with Traditional Learning * Teacher: - shows this table on the screen: Page | 4
- - divides the class into 4 groups and asks each group to compare ‘Blended Learning’ and ‘Traditional Learning’ based on 4 criteria. - calls 2 groups to share their ideas. - T asks 2 other groups which they prefer: blended or traditional learning and why. Ss do as instructed. Ss share their ideas with the rest of the class. T invites some groups to present their ideas to the whole class, and praises the groups for interesting and imaginative ideas. Suggested answers 2. Consolidation (2 minutes) Teacher asks: What have you learnt today? - We have listened to a conversation about blended learning and compare blended learning with traditional learning. 3.
