- Week 24 Preparing date: ___ Teaching date: ___ Period: 74 UNIT 8- NEW WAYS TO LEARN Speaking A. AIMS By the end of this lesson, Ss will be able to: 1. Knowledge - Talk about advantages and disadvantages of online learning and give reasons for their ideas 2. Competence - Gain some language expressions to talk about advantages and disadvantages - Talk about the advantages and disadvantages of online learning and give reason for their ideas 3. Quality - Be aware of online learning and ready to adapt this new way of learning; - Develop self-study skills B. TEACHING AIDS 1. Students: - Grade 10 textbook 2. Teachers: - Computer connected to the Internet - Projector/ TV/ pictures and cards - sachmem.vn C. TEACHING PROCEDURES I. Warm up: Game - Jigsaw puzzle (The topic word is online learning) (5 minutes) Objective: - To arouse the classroom atmosphere. - To lead in the lesson Content: Board race game Output: Ss can find out the topic word “Online learning” Process: * Teacher gives instructions of how to play the game, and gives an example. Ss discuss in their teams and write down the words. Ss in each team take turns to write their words on the board. Teacher confirms the correct words, decides the winner and leads in the lesson. Rules and an example of the ‘Jigsaw puzzle”: - Ss guess the name of each device in each puzzle and guess the key picture behind after each puzzle is opened. 1 correct answer = 10 points - KEY picture = 50 points - The class is divided into teams. - In one minute, Ss have to find the name of the picture - If the Ss guess one picture - 1 correct answer, the team gets 10 points. - If the Ss guess the key picture, the team gets 50 points. New lesson 1. Vocabulary (3 minutes) Objective: To pre-teach some vocabulary so that students can understand the meanings and use them correctly in main speaking tasks. Content: Pre-teaching vocabulary Output: Ss can understand the given words Process: * Teacher: - shows the words one by one, plays the recording and has Ss repeat the sounds of the words. - has Ss guess the meanings of the words based on pictures, explanations or examples. 1. technical problems (ns): Ex: We may have technical problems when learning online. 2. connection (n): 3. schedule (n): Ss do as instructed. T confirms the meanings, calls on some individual Ss to make sentences with each word. 2. Activities Activity 1: Discussing (5 minutes) Objective: To help students collect materials from the previous lesson for the following speaking tasks Content: Recall the previous knowledge by read again Output: Ss can recall the advantages and disadvantages of learning online from the reading lesson Page | 2
- Process: *T shows on the screen the following table. T asks Ss to refer to the advantages and disadvantages of online learning when compared to face-to-face learning from the Reading lesson and fill in the table. - - T asks 2 Ss to give their answers T gives feedbacks and shows the correct answers on the slide Suggested answers: Activity 2: Matching (8 minutes) Objective: To introduce more ideas for the main speaking task and get students involved in the lesson Content: Matching Output: Ss get involved in the lesson Process: Fill in the chart ONLINE LEARNING Advantages Disadvantages * Teacher: - has Ss read the sentences, and discuss with a peer to do the matching. - reminds them that besides using Do you think/ believe/ that and encourages them to give opinions and make small exchanges after doing the matching, e.g. Student A: Do you think one of online learning is that we can learn at our own pace. Activity 3: Discussing (10 minutes) Objective: To give students an opportunity to discuss ideas in groups and share with the rest of the class. Content: Discuss ideas in groups and share with the rest of the class Output: Ss’ conversations Process: WORK IN GROUPS. DISCUSS AND PROVIDE EXPLANATIONS TO SUPPORT YOUR SIDE. USE THE TABLE TO NOTE YOUR IDEAS. * T has Ss work in groups, discussing - has each group chooses to be either For or Against online learning. - has Ss discuss and provide explanations to support your side. Use the table below to note your ideas. In weaker classes, T can let students match the explanations with its side. In stronger classes, T endcourages them to think of explantions. Ss do as instructed. Ss share their ideas with the rest of the class by playing the game: PASSING THE BALL. Rules: A song is played while Ss are passing a ball one by one. When the music stops, the student who keeps the ball will make a presentation. Teacher praises Ss for interesting and imaginative ideas, and for providing well- formulated reasons. Suggested answers FOR – We can learn anytime and anywhere with an Internet connection. (We don’t have to go to school and we can save a lot of time travelling. We can do assignments when we have free time as they are uploaded online.) – We can organise our own study schedule. (We choose to attend the courses that are suitable for our schedule. The timetable may not be fixed.) AGAINST – This can harm our health. (If we sit in front of a computer for a long time, it can cause shortsightedness or backache.) – We may have technical problems. (We can't follow the teacher's lesson or submit homework.) Page | 4
- Activity 4: Role-play (9 minutes) Objective: to provide Ss with chance to further practice Content: Sts act out to discuss your opinions about online learning Output: Ss’ conversations Process: Discuss your opinions about online learning. Use your notes in Task 1,2,3 *T divides the class in 4 groups and play different roles as described below: - Group 1: Zoom CEO - Group 2: Students - Group 3: Teachers - Group 4: Parents T explains the context of the role-play: It’s an educational talk show where each member will take turns talking about the advantages and disadvantages of online learning from their point of view. -Ss have to use the ideas provided in Task 1,2,3 and useful languages on the slides.
