- Week 23 Preparing date: ___ Teaching date: ___ Period: 73 UNIT 8 – NEW WAYS TO LEARN Reading A. AIMS By the end of this lesson, Ss will be able to: 1. Knowledge - Develop reading skills for general ideas and for specific information about online and face-to- face learning. - understand the topic-related words introduced in previous lessons. - use the topic-related words in meaningful contexts. 2. Competence - Be collaborative and supportive in pair work and team work; - Actively join in class activities; - Develop reading skills. 3. Quality - Be able and willing to sharing housework in the family. B. TEACHING AIDS 1. Students: - Grade 10 textbook 2. Teachers: - Computer connected to the Internet - Projector/ TV/ pictures and cards - sachmem.vn C. TEACHING PROCEDURES I. Warm up: GAME: GUESSING GAME (7 minutes) Objectives: - To create an active atmosphere in the class before the lesson; - To lead into the new lesson Content: Having some warm-up activities to create a friendly and relaxed atmosphere to interest Ss in the lesson. Output: Students’ interest in the new lesson Process: - T divides the class into groups of four, has Ss discuss in groups. - T explains the rules of the game: There are 3 sets of pictures (3 pictures/set) which are about different ways of learning. T shows them one by one and asks students guess what they are. + gets the correct answer after the 1st picture they get 3 points. + gets the correct answer after the 2nd picture they get 2 points. + gets the correct answer after the 3rd picture they get 1 point. The team with more points will be the winner. Page | 1
- - SS work in groups - T checks the answers on the board, decides the winner and leads in the lesson. Suggested answers: Set 1: Key: Online learning Set 2: Key: Self study Set 3: Key: face-to-face learning II. New lesson 1. Activities Activity 1: Pre-reading (10 minutes) Objective: To introduce the topic of the reading and get students involved in the lesson Content: Look at the picture and answer the questions Output: SS can get to know the topic Process: * T sets the context for the reading tasks, asks some questions about the picture and has Ss call out the answers as a class. Suggested questions: Page | 2
- 1. Where is the girl in the picture a? 2. What can you see on her computer screen? 3. How is she learning? 4. Where are students in picture b? 5. Are they facing the teacher? /Are they taught in person? 6. What do we call this traditional type of learning? 7. Have you experienced both ways of learning? Ss answer the questions. Teacher confirms, shows the answers on the screen. Suggested answers: 1. at home, in front of a computer 2. teacher/tutor 3. online 4. in the classroom 5. yes 6. face-to-face learning While-reading (17 minutes) Activity 2: Find the main idea of a passage Objective: To help students to find the main idea of a passage Content: Read the passages and find the main idea of a passage. Output: Ss can understand how to find the main idea of a passage Process: * Teacher: - asks Ss how to get the main idea or gives the suggestion on finding a main idea of a passage How to find the main idea of a passage? - (1) Identify the topic. - (2) Summarize the passage in your own words. - Check the (3) first and last sentences. - Look for (4) repetition of ideas. - asks Ss to work in groups to apply this suggestion to find out the main idea Ss discuss in groups to find out the answers and raise their hands to give the answers. T confirms, shows the answers on the screen and asks Ss to make corrections if they choose the wrong answers. Key: B. Ways of learning Activity 3: Reading for specific information Objective: To help students practise reading for specific information Content: Read the text gain and answer the questions Output: Students can improve their reading skill for specific information Page | 3
- Process: * Teacher: - asks Ss to talk about how to get the specific information of a passage or gives the suggestion for them The steps of reading for specific information 1.Read the instructions. 2.Underline key words in the questions. 3.Read the passage and scan for key words or synonyms/paraphrased expressions. 4.Compare and decide answers. - asks Ss to work individual read the instructions and underline the key words in each of them. - checks which words Ss have underlined - go through the text to find the answer and has Ss work in pairs to compare their answers * Students - Ss do as guided T has SS give their answers to the class and calls other students from other pairs to give comments on his/her answers *T checks and gives feedback Suggested answers This person .
