- Week 21 Preparing date: ___ Teaching date: ___ Period: 63 UNIT 7: VIET NAM AND INTERNATIONAL ORGANISATIONS Getting started A. AIMS By the end of this lesson, Ss will be able to: 1. Knowledge - An overview about the topic “Viet Nam and international organisation”. - Vocabulary related to activities of international organisations - Grammar: Comparative and superlative adjectives 2. Competence - Develop communication skills and creativity - Be collaborative and supportive in pair work and team work - Actively join in class activities 3. Quality - Willing to talk and use the vocabulary as well as some collocations relating to the topic. B. TEACHING AIDS 1. Students: - Grade 10 textbook 2. Teachers: - Computer connected to the Internet - Projector/ TV/ pictures and cards - sachmem.vn C. TEACHING PROCEDURES I. Warm up (7 minutes) Objectives: - To create an active atmosphere in the class before the lesson; - To lead into the new lesson Content: Having some warm-up activities to create a friendly and relaxed atmosphere to interest Ss in the lesson. Output: Students’ interest in the topic of the lesson Process: WHAT DO YOU KNOW ABOUT THESE ORGANIZATIONS? - Teacher gives the symbol of some organizations (The United Nation, United Nations Children’s Fund, United Nations Development Program) - Teacher asks Ss to say something about each organization. - Ss do as instructed. II. New lesson 1. Activities Activity 1: Vocabulary - pre-teach (5 minutes) Objective: To help Ss use key language more appropriately before they listen and read Page | 1
- Content: Pay attention to some key language Output: Students’ understanding of some new words Process: - T asks Ss to look at the explanation and the photos to guess the meaning of new words. - Ss say the Vietnamese meaning of the word. 1. peacekeeping (adj) /ˈpiːskiːpɪŋ/: gìn giữ hòa bình 2. harm (n) /hɑː(r)m/: tổn hại 3. expert (adj) /ˈekspɜːrt/: tinh thông 4. investor (n) /ɪnˈvestə(r)/: nhà đầu tư - Other Ss correct if the previous answers are incorrect. - Teacher shows the Vietnamese meaning, says the words aloud and asks Ss to repeat them. Activity 2: Listen and read (6 minutes) Objectives: - To introduce the unit topic (Viet Nam and international organisations); - To introduce some vocabulary and the grammar points to be learnt in the unit. Content: Listen and read Output: Students’ getting to know about the topic, some vocabulary and grammar points of the lesson Process: - Teacher plays the recording twice for Ss to listen and read along. - Ss underline the information related to international organisations while they are listening and reading. - Ss work in pairs and compare the words and phrases they have underlined and discuss their meanings. - Teacher checks comprehension as a class and calls on some Ss to read the paragraphs aloud. Activity 3: Read the text again and choose the correct answers. (10 minutes) Objective: To check Ss’ comprehension of the texts. Content: Read the text and choose the correct answers Output: Students’ understanding of the lesson and answering the questions Process: - Teacher asks Ss to work in pairs. - Ss read each question carefully to choose the best answer, then find evidence to support the answers. - Teacher asks Ss share their answers with the class. - Teacher confirms the correct answers. Key: 1. A 2. B 3.C Activity 4: Find words in the texts (A, B, C, or D) that mean the following. (6 minutes) Objective: To introduce or revise words related to activities of international organisations. Content: Find words in the texts Output: Students can find out the words Process: - Teacher asks Ss to scan the four texts (A, B, C and D) to find the words matching the meanings given. Page | 2
- - If necessary, Teacher goes through the definitions and elicits the parts of speech Ss need to look for in the texts. - Ss compare their answers in pairs. - Teacher confirms the correct words and shows all the definitions on the slides. Key: 1. peacekeeping 2. harm 3. expert 4. investor Activity 5: Complete the sentences with the words and phrases from 1. (8 minutes) Objective: To help Ss recognise comparative and superlative adjectives Content: Complete the sentences Output: Students can use comparative and superlative adjectives Process: - T has Ss read each sentence and try to recall the comparative or superlative adjective used in the texts. - Ss work individually to read through the texts and find the correct words / phrases. - T asks the class to call out the comparative or superlative adjectives only, then calls on individual Ss to read the complete sentences. - T checks the answer and tells Ss that they will learn more about this grammar point in the following lesson. Consolidation (2 minutes) - T asks: What have you learnt today? - Ss: We have learnt about some lexical items about international organisations; comparative and superlative adjectives . 3.
